Title: A Theory of Microwave Propulsion for Spacecraft
Author: Roger Shawyer
Date: 07/06/2006
Goal: Propellantless Propulsion (1)

Summary

In this paper the author describes a new principle of electric propulsion for spacecraft, using microwave technology to achieve direct conversion of d.c. power to thrust without the need for propellant. A simplified illustrative description of the principles of operation is given, followed by the derivation, from first principles, of an equation for the thrust from such a device. The implications of the law of conservation of energy are examined for both static and dynamic operation of the device.

The website of the author (www.emdrive.com) has further information including photographs of a prototype and a discussion of possible applications.
